What is a Broiler Cage System ?

A chicken broiler cage system is designed specifically for raising broilers, which are chickens bred for meat production. Unlike layer cage systems, which are designed for egg-laying hens, broiler cage systems focus on maximizing growth and meat yield. Here are key features and aspects of chicken broiler cage systems:

1. **Structure and Design**:
   - **Cages**: Typically made of metal wire or a combination of metal and plastic, these cages are arranged in rows and tiers, similar to layer cages, but are often larger to accommodate the faster-growing broilers.
   - **Space**: Each cage is designed to provide enough space for the broilers to grow and move, although the space is still limited compared to free-range systems.
   - **Flooring**: The floors are often slatted to allow waste to fall through, keeping the living area cleaner.

2. **Management Efficiency**:
   - **Automated Systems**: Broiler cage systems often include automated feeding, watering, and waste removal systems, which help to maintain consistent conditions and reduce labor costs.
   - **Temperature and Ventilation**: These systems are designed to maintain optimal temperature and ventilation, which are crucial for the rapid growth of broilers.

3. **Growth and Health**:
   - **Growth Optimization**: The environment is controlled to maximize growth rates, including providing appropriate lighting, nutrition, and space.
   - **Health Monitoring**: The cage system allows for easier monitoring of individual birds for health issues, enabling quick identification and treatment of sick broilers.

4. **Animal Welfare Concerns**:
   - **Space and Movement**: Broilers in cage systems have limited space to move, which can lead to health issues such as leg problems and other physical stress.
   - **Natural Behaviors**: The restricted environment prevents broilers from expressing natural behaviors like dust bathing, foraging, and proper exercise.

5. **Regulations and Alternatives**:
   - **Welfare Standards**: There is increasing pressure and regulation around the welfare of broilers, with some countries and organizations advocating for more humane systems.
   - **Alternative Systems**: Alternatives to broiler cage systems include deep litter systems, where broilers are kept on the floor in large, open spaces with bedding material, and free-range systems, which allow broilers access to outdoor areas.

Broiler cage systems are used to achieve efficient meat production through controlled environments and automation, but they face criticism and regulatory challenges due to animal welfare concerns.

Technical Specifications of Cage Carcass

  • Thanks to the drawers designed in the drawer system, broilers are provided with convenience during transportation and cleaning.

  • Tezcan and / or Assan trademark 275 gr / m² zinc coated galvanized hair is used in the cage.

  • The pillars in the cage's frame are made of 2 mm galvanized iron. Side skirts and mirrors in the cage are manufactured from 0,90 mm galvanized. The whole sheet metal is processed in punch, laser and CNC looms.

  • Thanks to the high density polyethylene material used on the cage floors, a comfortable floor is provided even for newborn chicks.

  • Thanks to this material used in the cage base soils, it provides important advantages both in terms of ventilation, fertilizer application and prevention of burns of ammonia.

Feeding System

  • Feeding consists of spiral feed system and there are 2 plate feeders per eye.

  • The feeding system can be lifted and lowered according to the age of the pilic by means of a crane.

  • Thanks to specially designed feeders it is possible to reach even a day old chick easily.

  • Thanks to the swich, which is located at the end of the cage, the system has a system that stops feed distribution automatically when the feeders are full.

Water Drinking System

  • There are 2 line nipples per eye and 14 ball nipples in one driking unit, 7 eyes per driking unit.

  • In each watery way there are 2 regenerative regulators.

  • The network is transferred to the regulators.

Manure Discharge System

  • The manure is transported with polypropylene plastic manure band which transports the manure  which is located under each layer and extends along the cage to the discharge band.

  • Movement is provided by separate gearmotors for each floor.

  • Manure is delivered to the fertilizer drainage band at the end of the poultry with strippers which are available on each floor.

  • At the back of the cage is placed a protective lid to prevent contamination by glare splashes.

  • The carrier rolls used in the hoods are specially rubber covered and the shift of the band is minimized.

Broiler Evacuation System

  • When it is time for broilers to evacuate, specially designed drawer bases are manually opened to allow animals to fall on the cleaned manure band..

  • The broilers coming from the manure band are transferred to a second broiler transfer conveyor and delivered to the truck.
